Slow Down!
Good morning Springfield!
Many neighbors on the website and application Nextdoor are frustrated with drivers who speed through our neighborhoods. This is a concern on every street, and only increases as the weather warms up and more of our kids play games, ride their bikes, or walk across the street to a friends home. Here are some steps you can take to support safe streets in our city.
1) Call your Ward & At Large City Councilors and let them know you support Ward 2 Councilor Michael Fentons' proposed ordinance to allow speed humps to be placed on neighborhood roads. Click here to obtain the e-mail addresses of the current City Councilor members. Currently, speed humps are not allowed on neighborhood roads.
2) Write to your Ward City Councilor requesting that a posted speed limit sign be installed on your street. Click here to view a map of Springfield’s wards. Your ward is a number from 1 to 8, and your precinct is a letter from A-H. Every resident has a Ward Councilor who represents all of the precincts within that ward. As a candidate for an At Large seat, I’m running to represent all wards! If you have a sign on your street that is damaged, faded, or obstructed by trees, click here or call 413-736-3111 to report this.
3) If you live near an intersection that should have a traffic light, a cross walk, or other safety improvements, click here to read about how to start that discussion with the City. You will want to include your local Ward Councilor, the five At Large Councilors, and your Neighborhood Council to build support and advocacy. We live in a large City, and as the old adage goes - “the squeaky wheel gets the grease.”
I am an advocate for safe neighborhoods and safe streets. Please call me at 413-219-8305 or e-mail me at votelatorre@gmail.com if you would like me to meet you at an intersection in the city that you feel is unsafe.
