FY2023 Budget Review

Please join Springfield City Council At Large Candidate Juan F. Latorre III for a Zoom meeting to review the FY2023 Budget for the City of Springfield. The meeting will take place on Wednesday, June 1st, at 6:30 PM. Use this link to join the Zoom Meeting.

You can RSVP via my meeting invitation on Facebook, by sending me an e-mail at votelatorre@gmail.com, or sending me a private message via Nextdoor. An RSVP is not required to attend.

The proposed budget, which will fund the government from July 1st, 2022 - June 30th, 2023 is $819.0M, an increase of 8.4% Year over Year (YoY) , or $63.3 over FY2022. This includes a $53.1M increase in the school budget, primarily driven by an increase in Chapter 70 (State) aid. The city side budget, which covers all other municipal services, is proposed to increase by 3.8% YoY.

Including the FY23 proposal, Springfield’s municipal budget is scheduled to increase by $190.2M in the last five years:

  • FY2022: $755.7M, an increase of 3.9% YoY

  • FY2021: $727.6M, an increase of 5.2% YoY

  • FY2020: $691.7M, an increase of 5.4% YoY

  • FY2019: $656.2M, an increase of 4.4% YoY

  • FY2018: $628.8M, an increase of < 2% YoY (FY2017 was $616.8M)

The FY2023 budget was first announced on Masslive and is also available on the City of Springfield's website.

The City Council has not yet scheduled the vote on the FY2023 budget, but I anticipate that the meeting will take place on Monday, June 13 in the evening. This meeting will take place via Zoom.

Before the City Council deliberates, a Public Speak Out will take place to allow residents to provide their input on the City Budget. The Public Speak Out has not been announced yet, but I expect that it will take place on Monday, June 13 via Zoom. To participate in the Public Speak Out, you must call the City Council office at (413) 787-6170. A cutoff date to register for the Public Speak Out will likely be announced as Friday, June 10 at 12 PM.
